VESTIGE / Craft Oslo / Bangkok

Made well, and made to remain.

VESTIGE is designed in Oslo and made by hand in Bangkok. Every piece begins as solid 925 sterling silver, finished by hand, and built to be worn for decades rather than a season. Where a piece is gold, that silver body is bonded with 18k gold at a minimum of three microns — vermeil, not plating.

Where the work happens

Designed in Oslo. Made in Bangkok.

We do not obscure where our jewellery is made. The design work happens in Oslo, where each study begins as a drawing and is reduced until only its essential line remains. The making happens in Bangkok, with a small number of carefully selected partner workshops.

Thailand is one of the world's centres of silversmithing, and has been for generations. The people who finish our pieces have spent their working lives doing it. Choosing them was a decision about quality, not about cost.

Oslo — Design

Reference, drawing, proportion and reduction. Every form is resolved before a single sample is cut.

Bangkok — Making

Casting, filing, brushing and mirror-polishing, carried out by hand in partner workshops we know by name.

How a piece is arrived at

Dozens of samples. One object.

Nothing is released because it was the first thing that worked. Each study goes through repeated rounds of physical samples — adjusting a profile by fractions of a millimetre, changing where a polished edge catches the light — until one version is clearly right and the rest are set aside.

  1. Reference

A study begins with something observed rather than something fashionable — a line shaped by water, a surface altered by time. The reference is recorded before any jewellery is drawn.

  2. Reduction

In Oslo the reference is simplified, repeatedly, until only the gesture that gave it character remains. Most of the work at this stage is removing things.

  3. Sampling

The form is cut as a physical sample, then cut again. Profiles shift by fractions of a millimetre, edges move, weights change. Dozens of versions are made and rejected before one is kept.

  4. Hand-finishing

Each piece is filed, brushed and mirror-polished by hand in Bangkok. The contrast between a brushed field and a polished edge is set by a person looking at it, not by a machine cycle.

  5. Inspection

Every piece is checked individually before it is boxed. Anything that does not hold the line cleanly does not ship.

What the price actually buys

The same making. Without the markup.

Most jewellery sits at one of two extremes: cheap plated pieces made to be replaced, or luxury-house pieces carrying a very large premium for the name on the box. The material standard and the finishing methods at the top end are not a secret, and they are not exclusive. We use them, and we price without the name.

Silver, and what wear does to it

A surface that keeps a record.

Sterling silver tarnishes. This is a property of the metal, not a fault in the piece, and it is the reason we chose it. A brushed surface slowly darkens in the places a polished one stays bright, and the piece begins to carry a record of how it has actually been worn.

A plated piece cannot do this. As its coating wears, a different metal appears underneath and the object simply looks damaged. Solid silver only changes. It can be cleaned back to its original state at any point, or left to keep its patina — and unlike a coating, it can be professionally restored for as long as you own it.
